They tried to bury us.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, anyone with powers was targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope. Only a few people remain with the power to use magic, and they must remain hidden.
Zélie is one such person. Now she has a chance to bring back magic to her people and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must learn to harness her powers and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
Danger lurks in Orïsha, where strange creatures prowl, and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to come to terms with the strength of her magic – and her growing feelings for an enemy.
Review:

For a debut novel I found this book to be outstanding. The world the author created was detailed and steeped in history, the characters were well developed and appealing and the magic system was really unique and simply amazing. The whole book kept me engaged and wanting to read, I was led through laughter, sadness and nail biting suspense.

I really loved the set up of the story, seeing everything unfold from three different points of view led to some great insight into varying mindsets. I highly recommend this one to anybody who appreciates fantastic world building and clever magic systems.

I gave this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

As an added extra check out the table below for details on how to find out what Maji Clan you belong to!

Mine is Lighter which I am happy with, I quite like the idea of being able to play with light and dark. It'd be handy when I needed a torch ;)

Thank you so much to My Kinda Book and Macmillan for the chance to be part of this amazing blog tour!

So when Vassa's stepsister sends her out for light bulbs in the middle of night, she knows it could easily become a suicide mission. But Vassa has a bit of luck hidden in her pocket, a gift from her dead mother. Erg is a tough talking wooden doll with sticky fingers, a bottomless stomach, and a ferocious cunning. With Erg's help, Vassa just might be able to break the witch's curse and free her Brooklyn neighbourhood. But Babs won't be playing fair. February Wrap Up and March TBR

So in February 2018 I managed to read a total of 14 books.

In order of reading I completed Furthermore by Teherah Mafi, Poe Dameron vol 2 by Charles Soule, The Extinction Trials by SM Wilson, Sky Song by Abi Elphinstone, Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell, Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst, Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend, Shadowblack by Sebastien de Castell, Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card vol 2 by CLAMP, York by Laura Ruby, The Fandom by Anna Day, Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco, Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter and Poe Dameron vol 3 by Charles Soule.

Stats -

Hardback = 5
Paperback = 4
Graphic Novel = 3
Audiobook = 2

2*'s = 1
3*'s = 1
4*'s= 3
4.5*'s= 5
5*'s= 4

14 books was definitely far more than I expected to read, I was hoping to read a good amount but didn't expect to match January.  My 5 star reads were Spellslinger, Shadowblack, Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card vol 2 and Poe Dameron vol 3. Spellslinger and Shadowblack were re-reads but this time I listened to the audiobooks which were amazing. The most disappointing read for me this month was Vassa in the Night, this sounded really interesting but just ended up being weird. I didn't get what was happening a lot of the time and just found the whole thing lacked cohesion.

So in March I have quite a few busy weekends and I am on holiday for a week. So my hesitant TBR for March is as follows; Outalkers by Fiona Shaw, State of Sorrow by Melinda Salisbury,  Release by Patrick Ness and Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer.
