In August 2019 I managed to read a total of 16 books.
Overall it was a strong reading month and I read some real gems.

Audiobooks -
Winter by Marissa Meyer
Narrated by Rebecca Soler
Length - 23h 30m
Star rating - 5 stars
So it is no secret I have loved all of the Lunar Chronicles books so far and this one was no different. Winter was a lovely character and it still amazes me how Marissa Meyer manages to get in so many references to all of the original stories in a way that flows so well. I was happy with the ending and have gotten so much joy from listening to the whole series.
Stars Above by Marissa Meyer
Narrated by Rebecca Soler
Length - 9h 28m

These stories were a lovely way to finish off the series. It was interesting to get a story for each of the characters - a little more insight into them all. My favourite was the final one - which definitely needed to be read after the series!
The Doll Factory by Elizabeth Macneal
Narrated by Tuppence Middleton
Length - 10h 54m
Star rating - 2.5 stars
This was an interesting story but I was left very disappointed in the ending. Having become attached to the main character I wanted to know more and felt let down when it ended as it did.

To be taught, if fortunate by Becky Chambers
Length - 176 pages
Star Rating - 3 stars
I love the Wayfarers series so had high hopes for this one but for me it just fell a little flat. I never connected with any of the characters, which for me was a strength of her series and one of the things she writes so well. There were some incredibly well written descriptions but for me it lacked heart. I'm glad I read it but it won't be one I re-read.

Heartless by Marissa Meyer
Length - 450 pages
Star Rating - 3.5 stars
While this was well written it wasn't as gripping or strong as the Lunar Chronicles. I liked Catherine but she felt too much of a pushover for most of this book. Jest was by far the most interesting character but we didn't find out an awful lot about him. And while the end does lead nicely into Alice in Wonderland I felt it was a little too...convenient. The reason for Catherine's change seemed flimsy.
The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker
Length - 325 pages
Star Rating - 3.5 stars
This book definitely had me torn. The first half was really interesting and unique but the second half felt like a rehash of Achilles story and focused less on the girls, which was a shame. It was a well written story but sometimes the use of modern language was a little jarring.
Length - 400 pages
Star Rating - 4.5 stars
I really enjoyed the second book in the Pages and Co series. Tilly is such a bright and curious character and Oskar is the best of best friends. The Paris setting was great and meeting Oskar's family was really interesting. The twists and turns of the second half of the book was so gripping that I couldn't put it down. Very enjoyable.
The Princess who Flew with Dragons by Stephanie Burgis

Length - 223 pages

Despite the previous characters not really being in this one I really liked getting to know Sofi more as she got to know herself through the friends she makes and the inner strength she finds. This book had a really positive feel to it and I appreciated that a lot. Great final book in the series.

Circle of Shadows by Evelyn Skye
Length - 454 pages
Star Rating - 4 stars
This was an easy read with some good characters and I did enjoy it. The concept and plot were good, it was fairly simple but engaging. I did have some issues with the romantic aspect which felt clumsy but ignoring that it was okay and I do want to read the next one.
Nevernight by Jay Kristoff
Length - 448 pages
Star Rating - 5 stars
This was a spontanious re-read as my best friend was reading it and I felt like reading it too. I am pleased to say I still loved it and still remembered more of the story than I thought. I adore Mia and one thing I did forget was the humour in the story. Still love the intricate clever plot and all the characters.
Graphic Novels -
Mera Tidebreaker by Danielle Paige
Length - 208 pages
Star Rating - 3.5 stars
I found this to be like the DC Icons series but focusing more on the lesser known characters in graphic novel format. I did enjoy the story, it was an interesting take on her backstory. I found her a little naive and she latched onto Arthur too quickly but it was still fun to read.
Star Wars: Princess Leia by Mark Waid
Length - 120 pages
Star Rating - 4 stars
This was a really fun mini series which focuses on Princess Leia after the destruction of the Death Star. I really enjoyed seeing her active side and leading people. The art style was lovely and there were some beautiful depictions of Leia. Overall a nice short fun read.
