Synopsis:
As a future chieftain of the Crow caste, sixteen-year-old Fie abides by one rule: look after your own. Her clan of undertakers and mercy-killers takes more abuse than coin, but when her family is called to collect royal dead, she's hoping they'll find the payout of a lifetime. Instead, they find a still-living crown prince, his cunning bodyguard, and a common foe: a ruthless usurper queen who wants them all dead. Fie agrees to smuggle the prince across the nation in exchange for her people's safety. But with the queen's brutal hunters on their tail, she's forced to make the sacrifices that define a true leader.
Review:
Fie is a future leader of a band of Crows, people who are called upon to kill those infected with a plague before it has a chance to spread. Despite this important job they are disrespected and looked down on by most people they meet. When her current clan leader makes a deal with a Prince and his bodyguard her life is completely turned upside down. Can they learn to understand each other and work together to defeat the queen intent on taking over?
Fie is a brilliant character, she is sassy and definitely knows her own mind. I loved how capable she was and how she stuck up for herself. Her development through the story to becoming more of a leader was really well done, quite subtle in places too. I definitely liked the whole cast of characters and how Fie relates to them. I cannot help having a soft spot for Tavin too, he was a sweetheart. It was quite nice to have the two different 'classes' and how they each had stereotypical views of each other which were challenged throughout the story. The magical system was also super unique and really clever, the teeth sounds a little odd to start with but makes a lot of sense as you get into the story and I enjoyed that aspect a lot.
Overall I really enjoyed this book. It had a strong cast of characters, tight storyline and I am really looking forward to the next book!
