December Wrap Up

In December 2019 I managed to read a total of 10 books.

I didn't read as much as I was hoping to but it was fairly busy with Christmas and family stuff so I am still happy.

Audiobooks -

The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi
Narrated by Laurie Catherine Winkel & PJ Ochlan
Length - 11h 55m
Star rating - 3.5 stars

It took me a while to warm up to the characters in this and when I did I definitely prefer the more background characters to the main. The story was interesting but I felt was let down a little by the male narrator who I found to have quite a flat monotone voice while the female narrator was much more engaging. I will try the sequel though.

Ahsoka by E.K. Johnston
Narrated by Ashley Eckstein
Length - 7h 04m
Star rating - 4 stars

The Star Wars audios are always fun to listen to. There is a lot of production which goes into it and I love the added soundeffects and music. Finding out more about Ahsoka was really interesting and I loved Ashley Eckstein's narration, she really captured the character for me. I liked it so much I want to watch the cartoon series with her in it.

The Gentleman's Guide to Getting Lucky by Mackenzi Lee
Narrated by Christian Coulson
Length - 2h
Star rating - 5 stars

This was ridiculously cute and I adore Monty and Percy so much. They are just such a sweet couple and this let us explore their relationship just a little bit more. I do recommend people read it before reading A Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy though as that it where it fits in the timeline.

Novels  -

The Christmasaurus by Tome Fletcher
Length - 360 pages
Star Rating - 4.5 stars

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were great and I clicked with them well and the story was fun and creative. The topics it handled I thought it did very well with. At times it was somewhat simplified but it's target audience is somewhat younger than me so that was understandable. The illustrations were gorgeous.

Starsight by Brandon Sanderson
Length - 468 pages
Star Rating - 5 stars

This was a brilliant follow up to last years Skyward,  it definitely did not disappoint. I really liked how Spensa had to think over the course of the book about her views on other aliens and even situations she finds herself observing. This book definitely expands the world and I really enjoyed that. There are also some shocks and surprises and a killer cliffhanger!

Scorch Dragons by Amie Kaufman
Length - 368 pages
Star Rating - 4 stars

It took me a while to get into this book and I'm not sure why but once I did it was such fun. I really like Anders and Rayna and this book really did move the story along, I adored the quest aspect of it and look forward to the third and final book in this trilogy.

The Demon World by Sally Green
Length - 402 pages
Star Rating - 3.5 stars

While I enjoyed this it was not as good as the first book, two characters behaviour and personality really started to grate on my nerves. But I am incredibly invested in the other three which were all left on cliffhangers so I am now desperate to read the last book! I did find a lot of it felt like filler but being the middle book in a trilogy sometimes it does happen like that.

Mimi and the Mountain Dragon by Michael Morpurgo
Length - 48 pages
Star Rating - 4 stars

I read this after watching the tv cartoon adaptation and was surprised to find it quite different. I like how the book explored Mimi a little more and I just adore the way Morpurgo writes. He has such a lovely way with words. Definitely a good book to read to kids.

Graphic Novels  -

Dewdrop by Katie O'Neill
Length - 40 pages
Star Rating - 5 stars

Katie O'Neill's book are always a delight and this is no exception. The art is stunning and the moral story is told in such a lovely manner. It is a simple tale but spot on for younger children, it's good for adults too it just leaves you wanting more!

The Rise of Kylo Ren by Charles Soule
Length - 33 pages
Star Rating - 4 stars

This was a great start to what is sure to be a really interesting story. I shall read the rest when all the comics are collected into one Graphic Novel volume but this was definitely interesting.
